Ana Bengochea Indigenous Community Resilience

Ana Bengochea Ana Lucy Bengochea Indigenous Community Resilience and Risk Manager

Social Technician with over 22 years of experience in community-based risk management and resilience. Working primarily with Indigenous communities in Honduras, Ana has developed and led initiatives that empower local populations to prevent and respond to disasters through sustainable, resilience-driven approaches.

She played a key role in post-disaster community development following Hurricane Mitch and was recognised with the prestigious Equator Initiative Award for her contributions to grassroots resilience and climate adaptation. Currently, Ana leads the Municipal Comprehensive Risk Management Unit in Trujillo, Colón, where she works with 20 Local Emergency Committees (CODEL). These community-based structures are the first line of response in emergencies, and Ana's leadership includes training them as resilient, self-sustaining teams that support one another through knowledge exchange and collaborative action.

At the global level, Ana is an expert in community vulnerability mapping, early action, and anticipatory risk planning. She specialises in mobilising and organising communities from a resilience perspective, with extensive experience across local, regional, and national levels. Her work bridges technical risk management with grassroots knowledge, always centering the communities themselves as the drivers of their own resilience.

Ana is passionate about climate-resilient ecological strategies, and her work continues to inspire integrated, inclusive, and community-led approaches to disaster risk reduction.
