Marcus is a passionate and highly experienced resilience practitioner and advocate. For the last twenty eight years Marcus has worked extensively across Africa, Asia and Europe with governments, non-governmental organisations, United Nations agencies, International Financial Institutions and academia to develop and implement policies and practices to manage and prevent disasters & crisis, and strengthen the resilience of nations, organisations and communities. Through his work across all stages of the disaster’s cycle Marcus has gained particular expertise in facilitating all-of-society engagement and building linkages across traditionally fragmented humanitarian, disaster risk reduction, resilience and development boundaries, disciplines and administrative levels.
Between 2007- 2018 Marcus was the founding Executive Director of the Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR). Over a ten years period GNDR has grown rapidly to become the world’s largest alliance of civil society organisations committed to working collaboratively, in partnership with state and non-state actors, to strengthen the resilience and sustainability of communities and nations. As GNDR’s senior representative, Marcus served at the principal civil society interlocutor at the UN-facilitated negotiations of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Marcus has a collaborative leadership style, enjoys working in teams and is able to combine high-level strategic thinking with practical on the ground delivery. In addition to working through the Network, he is an Urban Scholar for the UN Global Compact Cities Programme and director of a specialist consultancy practice “Resilience Solutions” enabling people and organisations to survive and thrive in a world increasingly defined by extreme shocks and disturbances. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and a Master’s degree in Project Management.
